For my Mechanical Engineering senior capstone we were commissioned by Gilead to design and build an injection mechanism for administering highly viscous medications.
To achieve this, my team and I underwent a process of brainstorming, ideation, prototyping and fabrication.
We first created a set of user and engineering requirements for our device.
One Handed and Usable Manually.
Minimize Patient Pain & Discomfort
Reusable & Universal
Usable By a Vast Majority of Health Care Practitioners
We started by brainstorming potential solutions…
… and used a prioritization matrix to move forward with the CO2 gas assist mechanism.
This design is capable of delivering the required high forces while remaining practical and user-friendly.
We prototyped and validated our model. I led the design of the pneumatic system and the fabrication of the prototype.
